What in the world are Civitas, the ImmersaDesk and LandSpeeder?

A collaborative project between researchers at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the Integrated Systems Lab at the Beckman Institute has produced a portable Cube-like immersive virtual depiction of urban sprawl in Kane County, Illinois. Displayed on an ImmersaDesk, a one walled portable version of the Beckman fully immersive Cube, researchers and guests can fly through Kane County in stereo video, viewing various time periods of urban encroachment on the landscape. The program taking the actual data from Kane County was developed by Professor Varkki George Pallathucheril and programmed by Rose Marshack.
The next time you are in downtown Urbana (112 West Main) stop in Civitas, the Urban and Regional Planning Department's wonderful new storefront and see the exhibit.
