Beckman Institute Driving Simulator
Before taking a turn at the wheel in a real General Motors automobile,
visitors first tested out their skills on the mini version of the
simulator.
The visitors were able to drive a computer-generated road course and
encounter road hazards in a safe simulator environment.

|
Rollin' Down the River
Visitors navigated the Mississippi River on a virtual
reality tugboat. This simulation is a cooperative effort between the
NCSA Visualization and Virtual Environments group and the ISL at the
Beckman Institute. Special thanks to Paul Rajlich and Albert
Khakshour. |

Visitors here had an opportunity to explore engaging
math and physics concepts through the use of Lego gears. |

Trying to Hear One Voice Among Many - The Use of AVATARS
in Noisy Environments
This exhibit demonstrated several possible ways speech comprehension
can be improved when several people are talking. Visitors had a
chance to test their ability to listen to an "AVATAR", a 3D
model of an actual person delivering a speech.

Magic Mirror (or High Framerate Telepresence)
Using a combination of optical tracking system and
consumer video cameras, visitors found themselves in a virtual world.
Participants viewed themselves in the virtual worlds through a mirror,
where their image was a fully articulated AVATAR with a video texture for
a face.
