The Nature of Object Memory

These experiments ask the question, "How do people remember different properties of objects, such as location, size, and color?"

Subject studying an arrangement of cubes

Participants study a number of objects scattered around the front and side walls of the Cube (Fig. 1; note silhouette of participant to right of center). The objects may be covered with different patterns.

Subject recreating an arrangement of cubes

After the study period, the objects disappear for several seconds and the participant is then required to recall some aspect of the object set. For example, a set of objects may appear on the floor and the participant is required to drag them to their remembered locations (Fig. 2), or the participant selects the ones whose patterns match those that were present during the study period.
